'Modern Family? Part 2 - Living in family' by Mal Calladine - 6 June 2021

When problems come up in family relationships, are we more focused on correction or connection? In this talk, Mal Calladine looks at different ways we relate to each other as family, in community as well as biological families. We can choose different styles of relationship, such as being authoritarian or permissive when we are parenting, but we might need to learn how to find a middle, more life-affirming way to avoid pain and stress. What can we do to improve how we connect emotionally? Can Jesus' stories and personal example help?

Application questions

  1. In your household (or who you share life with), what experiences of family / household most come to mind from your journey that you want to adopt (take on for yourself) or adapt (do differently or in an opposite way?)

  2. What is your experience of a primary message of Belong, Believe and Behave in your experience of family? (in what order?)

  3. Where would you put your household along the spectrum of “authoritarian” to “permissive”? If there is a middle ground of ‘Life’ where there are both boundaries & shared connection, what would help you enter that space more?

  4. Who comes to mind that you think you need to invest in more ‘connection’, before doing any further ‘correction’ / challenge?

  5. Anywhere else the Holy Spirit was getting your attention during the talk?
