BOXSET BINGE THE BIBLE

Let God’s word move you

The Bible is an amazing, potentially life changing, collection of literature. It’s been inspirational for thousands of years - and some say you can hear God through it. On this page, we’ve gathered resources to help you explore it in your own way.

Our binge plan for 2024

We’re inviting you to join us on a journey through the whole of the Bible at what we’d call “boxset binge” pace, listening to about 100 minutes a week, the same as a couple of episodes of a bingeable show.

How we started

Luke and Acts (4 weeks): Luke 1-14, Luke 15-24, Acts 1-9, Acts 10-28

Genesis and some Psalms (3 weeks): 1. Genesis 1-24, 2. Genesis 25-44, 3. Genesis 45-50 & Psalms 1-28

Exodus (2 weeks): Exodus 1-22, Exodus 23-40

Where we are now and next

Leviticus and some Psalms and Proverbs (2 weeks): 1. Leviticus 1-15 & Psalms 29-37; 2. Leviticus 16-27 & Proverbs 1-9

Numbers and some Psalms (2 weeks): 1. Numbers 1-16 & Psalms 38-41; 2. Numbers 17-36

Mark (aiming to do this in one week around Easter): Mark

Job (1 week): Job

Joshua (1 week): Joshua

Judges (1 week): Judges

Ruth, Esther and some Proverbs (1 week): Ruth, Esther, Proverbs 10-18

Why boxset binge the Bible?

The Bible tells a big story with ongoing relevance to us. It does this through lots of smaller stories, pictures and poems. There are lots of attention-grabbing details, each part of a bigger picture. When we engage with it, we can get a sense of how we are part of something much bigger than ourselves too.

Classic “Bible study” is great for analysing the details, but we can easily get stuck. If we want to give the Bible a chance to move us, we have to move through it!

Top tips

  1. Less reading, more listening. For centuries, the contents of the Bible were heard much more than they were read. So while you could bury yourself in books if that’s best for you, why not listen instead? Modern technology puts a fantastic, English-accented, up to date translation at your fingertips, for free, on this website and in many Bible apps.

  2. Study a bit, share a lot. For some reason, we’ve come to think about “Bible” and “study” like words glued together, but are they making us stuck? It’s always a good idea to explore what the Bible means, but most people through history have done this through conversation and shared life rather than late night library sessions. Why not buddy up with a friend or group to explore and chat about what you find together? Or just let what you find in the Bible lead to ideas and questions you could share with any friends and family, whether they’ve ever looked at the Bible or not.

  3. It’s fine to do other things at the same time. Not that we need permission, but if we’ve grown up with sacred quiet times where we’ve forced ourselves to concentrate and felt guilty if we couldn't, it might feel wrong even to try listening to the Bible the way we’d listen to the radio or podcasts. But it can be really helpful to get on with a bit of stuff we need to do while we hear someone else talking about life from a different angle. We do it all the time, don’t we? And we might even make connections between the Bible and life that we would have missed in study mode.

  4. Enjoy the binge and get the big picture. A “verse of the day” can be inspirational, but it can also be like a puzzle piece - without the bigger picture, how do we know where it really fits in our lives? A binge through the Bible can give us the overview we need to piece everything together. Try listening for 30 minutes a day and you’ll cover a lot of ground in a week, maybe enough to give you an appetite for lots more some days. Yes, it’s like Netflix. Maybe you don’t come back every day, maybe you get caught up in the journey for hours sometimes. If you’re not studying for a test, why not just enjoy the ride? You might be amazed at how it shapes the way you see life the next day anyway.

More ways to explore the Bible

You can follow one of our Sunday talk series, based on a theme you find interesting. You’ll often find podcast discussions alongside the talks showing how we’re processing the ideas and putting them into practice together.

Or you can try these other series we’ve made which go through parts of the Bible in different ways.

Resource pages

Below, you’ll find links to every book in the Bible and pages where we are collecting helpful resources if you’re exploring those books. These include

  • helpful summaries from The Bible Project and more,

  • notes we made on a daily trek through the whole Bible in 2020 (which turned out to be a remarkable year…)

  • and (work in progress) links to related talks and series we’ve produced at Severn Vineyard so you don’t just get food for thought, but people you know you can share it with! Look at these as the beginnings of conversations we’d love to continue with you.
